I just realized that not all teachers have switched the link to Mr. C's website.  Last year he moved to Mr. Cappelletto's Science Class  and has all of his class info posted there (with the exception of Grade 8 science, for now.)  So if you have linked here from another Rivier blog, hit the link and check out the website!

This is why your assignments take a long time to mark...

So you may be wondering why Mr. C has not been posting on his blog for AGES and why it sometimes takes a while to get your assignments back. Well, as I've mentioned before, he grew up in B.C. and was (believe it or not) on the ski team when he was in high school. You may not realize that winter is an extremely busy time of year for him because he still squeezes in as much time on the slopes as possible! Take a look:

Despite this hectic schedule, always remember that Mr. C is available before school, at lunch hours and after school many days - if you just ask - if you feel you need some extra help with any of your science subjects! There is no need to suffer in silence or to be falling behind in your work!

September Science Updates

Hello everyone and welcome to a new year.  Here is a list of a few things everyone should be keeping track of:

1)  Are you keeping track of all your key vocabulary terms?
2)  If we have learned new equations do you know how to use them?
3)  Be aware of when we are having our next assessment because if you miss one you have to be sure   to see me to arrange a time when to complete it.


Science 9:  We are finishing up our first outcome for the genetics unit.  Make sure your information paper on genetic conditions is handed in.


Science 10:  Remember to have finished the assignmnet on sustainability and that the Ecosystem project
is due next Friday.


Chemistry 20:  We've just completed our first assessment on the Modern atomic Theory unit and there   is going to be an exam scheduled after I return your assessment.

Physics 20: The Unit on Waves is just about done  and we will be having an assessment next week.

Biology 30: The Biochemistry unit is complete and we will be having an exam. Make sure you know
those building block structures.

Physics 30: The first section is complete and the worksheet is now due.

Upcoming Exams!

Physics 20 students will have a sound test on next Wednesday, March 21 and

Chemistry 30 students will have their solutions test the same day.

That Wednesday is the first day back after the long weekend, so don't forget to study on those extra days off!

All of you should have already received your assessments back in class.  If you somehow missed out on having yours returned to you, be sure to ask me for it as you will need it to study for the test.  

As you know, your assessments are basically your exam outline - look to them to see the types of questions that will be on the exam!

More pre-exam don't panic tips!

Here's what I've got out of him on the eve of the bio exam girls:
You don't have to memorize ALL of the tiny parts of photosynthesis and respiration, just the main concepts of what they are - the basic steps and what happens in them.

Learn how to do genetics problems.

Learn the structure of DNA.

Learn the basics of protein synthesis.

Know your hormones.

Know the parts of the brain.

He says most of the test is multiple choice and matching.

Half the year is done

Well it's finals time time now and I hope everyone is busy studying. Here are some tips:

1) Make sure you know all of the vocabulary terms.
2) Focus on the major problems we have solved or concepts that were covered.
3) Do not overwhelm yourself with minor details. Again focus on the main topics and ideas.
4) If you will be needing it be sure your calculator works and you know how to use it.
5) If you have a recommend this is a real opportunity to improve your grade.


At one point I placed some links on the blog for each subject that you may find useful. Take the time to check them out.

Next half:

 One thing I emphasized the first half is a well organized and complete set of notes is your best friend. The work we do in class is designed to help you learn the concepts being taught. If you try your best and don't put work off until the last minute your results will improve.

There is one trend I have seen developing and this is an increase in classes missed by students. Vacations, sickness, orthodontists, and a multitude of other reasons seem to be taking their toll. Attendance in class, especially when lessons are being taught cannot be replaced by a set of photocopied notes. You really need to be there. Because of this, I am asking all students and parents to make a true effort. If you are trying to have the best possible transcript when applying for post secondary you may want to rethink that vacation or find an alternative time for that appointment. The choice is yours of course but remember that the job market and post secondary education is becoming competitive and you want to have as many options as you can.

Once a lesson is taught the courses must move forward. Provincially dictated curriculums must be covered in order to provide a complete subject. Because of this a topic cannot be retaught to the class a week later if a student has been absent. If we could go back in time that would be great but so far we can't (although the Physics 30 students are working on it.)

Countdown to the Physics Departmental...

This is where I would have the theme from "Jaws" playing if I could figure out how to do it.  Ha ha.  Sorry - not really.  Anyway, I think Mr. C has some old exams printed out for you to practice with, but I thought I would add this link Sask. Education Departmental Exam Samples since it has the Physics tests including last year's!  And if you go through them the answer key is included at the end, so you can see how you've done.  The link includes all subjects, so you have to scroll down to get to the Physics and then choose the year.  Hope this helps and try not to panic!

A lost video of Mr. C's days on the high school ski team!

Many of you may know that Mr. C grew up in Trail, B.C. and was on his high school ski team. Believe it or NOT we have unearthed a long-lost video of his glory days (Make sure you enlarge it to full screen for the best viewing experience):




Ha ha - I'm sure he wasn't quite so daring in his youth! That guy is pretty amazing! It does give you a glimpse of the town where Mr. C. lived, though and  that is part of the way he walked to school. For a longer teaser and info about the DVD go to kicker films.

Don't forget that December 21 is the deadline to make up any missed indicators. If you're not sure whether this applies to you, don't hesitate to come see me (Mr. C, not Mrs.)

Pig dissection is coming up in Grade 12 biology, so byo gloves if you feel you will want to wear protection!

For those of you studying for the physics test

Here are some practice questions to help. Bring your results to me tomorrow at noon to see how you've done.

1) Floyd is in a really cool race car and is travelling at 28 m/s. How far will he travel in .75
   days ?

2) A boat load of Rivier girls are in a boat travelling at 12 m/s when one of them throws out
   the anchor. The drag of the anchor causes the boat to slow to 5.0 m/s in 15 seconds. How far
   did the travel during that time span ?

3) A child is at the top of a hill. He begins to roll down the hill and accelerates at 1.7 m/s2.
   There is a car parked 150 m at the bottom of the hill. If the car stays there for 12 seconds
   will the boy crash into the car ?


4) Two people are having a foot race. Person A starts the race with a running start running
   6.0 m/s. Runner B gets a 100.00 M head start and begins running from rest accelerating at
   .60 m/s2. If the race is 950 M in length who wins the race and by what distance ?

A new year has started

Welcome back everyone. This year I will be adding a series of links that will summarize our science classes. You may use these sites to keep up on your studies, catch up if you have missed classes or provide extra review.

Hello everyone. It is time to gear up for the final stretch,

Sci 9:
The Electricity Unit is complete and we have an exam coming up. Be sure to use your formative evaluation sheet to help you in your studies. If you don't have it be sure to pick it up. The exam will be a lot like that assignment.

Last class I gave you some questions to research on the internet about Saskatchewan powder production. Make sure they are done for next class.


Science 10:
This week we will be working on a major assignment for our physics unit. It will be handed out on Monday


Biology 20:
 You are back from Europe now so it is time to get back to work. The presentations will go on this week. We will get ourselves organised on the first class and then get everything set.

Physics 20:
 We'll be looking at solving problems with lenses using equations. Also, the optics unit is almost done so be prepared for an exam on lenses next week.

Chem 30:
The Acid/Base review assignent is due this Monday. We will set an exam date during that class. The next unit is Electrochemistry so brush up on oxidation numbers.

Biology 30:
Presentations on the endocrine system is next class so be ready. We've got a couple more systems to cover and then . PIG DISSECTION !!!!!!!

Homework Club is on today in the library after school. Grab your books and bring all of your problems/questions (science, not personal, please) and we will work through them together.

Hello, everyone.

One thing you may have noticed is a couple of links showing up at the side of the blog. One is for Chem 30 and the other for Sci 9. These are some great resources for you to use. They will provide you with notes and practice on the topics we are studying . If you miss a class or might want to do some review you will find them very valuable.

This next week:
Science 9:  Electricity is on the menu. We will be looking at parallel and series circuits as well as OHM's
                  Law. Be sure to keep that journal up to date as a lot of new terms have come your way.

Biology 20: Make sure your Arthropod presentations are ready to go next class. After this we'll have
                    two dissections. The Grasshopper and the Crayfish are waiting.  Last call for the Worm 
                    dissections !!!!!


Biology 30: Notes on the brain and the nervous system on the way. After this we will be having an
                    exam on the Skeletal/Muscular system and the Nervous system.


Physics 20:  Test on sound on Wednesday. Be sure to study. The next topic will be our unit on light.

Chem 30: The sheets on free energy are due next class. Our Energy in reactions unit is now complete
                 so you know an exam is around the corner

                     circulatory system next. Make sure you keep current with the vocabulary.

Physics 20:  The next chapter will be on interference with sound waves. Bring your calculators to class
                     you will need them.

Science 10:  We have covered the basic structure of the atom and are looking at chemical bonds and
                    molecules. Don't fall behind as this week we will be working on skills like naming compounds
                    and writing formulas.


Make sure if you miss a lesson to bring any missed notes to me to be photo copied. If you are having troubles homework club will be starting next week. It is looking like Thursday after school will be the day.

Finally Basketball season is over and I have time to get back to the Blog.

Biology 30: We have begun our unit of mammalian systems. Today was an interesting class on bones and
                    their function. Be sure to learn the names of the bones. Also, your papers and genetics projects
                    are due this week.

Physics 20: The test on the Waves chapter is this week

Biology 20: Today we took notes on Platyhelminthes and on Nematoda. Your first dissection is this week
                    so come prepared to work on that earthworm.


Sci 9: Be sure to study for your Chem unit exam. 9(4) you are writing it this week and 9(3) your turn is
          after the Feb break

Sci 10:  Ecology test tomorrow. After that more lessons on the structure of the atom. We have covered the
             nucleus and the electron cloud is next.


Look for homework club to resume after the Feb break.

Science Homework Club is a go for today (Tuesday) and Wednesday at 3:30. Everyone who needs help/clarification or just to vent about their problems with anything Mr. C teaches is welcome. (Although Mrs. C will probably be providing the sympathetic ear.) Any changes to this plan will be in the announcements!

Despite the junior basketball starting up, we are going to squeeze in a Science Homework Club as requested this week.  Don't let me down, now -  some of you better show up!  Unless you hear otherwise we will go ahead Thursday at 3:30 in the library.  See you there!

Hello everyone. In the upcoming days there will be a few important tests and due dates.

Biology 30: We have begun our Genetics unit. The exam on the Cells unit is rapidly approaching. It will be on December 1st period I. Do not  and I mean do not wait to the last minute to study. This is a very thorough exam on the entire cell unit.

Physics 30: Our Energy exam is this upcoming Tuesday

Biology 20: Be sure to have your Fun fungal fact smart board presentation ready to go when it is your classes turn

Chemistry 20: If you have not handed in your Gases review sheet it is now overdue.

Science 9: Keep those journals up to date. We are studying the modern atomic theory right now so be sure to let me know if you need the notes.


Study club is still going on. Be sure to listen to the announcements as to the dates and times. Basketball is starting now so the day may vary week to week.

Couldn't resist - all the elastic collision problems in your notes.  There is no collision more elastic than a cat collision.

This is a very short week so hopefully we'll be able to get a few things done

Science 9: We will be having a lesson on the history of the modern atomic theory. There will be a Smart board presentation along with some notes and also we will be working on our note taking skill.

Biology 20: Out next Kingdom is the Fungi. An introductory video will be followed by a smart board lesson and a few notes. During this unit we will be doing an internet project where you will be using the smart board to tell us some Fun Fungal Facts

Biology 30: We have just finished our section on cellular respiration. This marks the end of out Cells unit. After a review assignment for respiration we will be tidying things up and getting ready for the exam. Please note this is a very thorough exam on the unit and you should not leave your review to the last moment.

Accounting 10: The chapter 5 exam is tomorrow

Physics 30: This week we will be finishing collisions and introducing the concepts of Work, Energy, and Power if time permits. Since we only have one class this week I doubt we'll get started on that but one can always hope. Just a note the rest of the course will be going quickly and we still have a couple of large units to accomplish so now is not the time to relax. Remember you will be writing the departmental in January

Science Homework Club

For all of you super-cool students who want to hang out in the library and get some help with your science homework (or just understanding what you're doing in class) Mr. C will be available for Science Homework Club again this week on Thursday from right after school until whenever it takes to clear up all of the questions you have.  By the tone of the previous post I'm thinking some of you should be coming to hang out and finish up some projects!  Or just to say...

Let's get that homework done, girls!  Don't be afraid to ask for help - at lunch, after school, whenever you need it.  We're all in this together :)

Important: Report cards will be out soon. Some of you have not completed all of your hand in assignments. A mark of zero has been entered as a result. If you wish to change this please complete the work you have missed and the mark will be changed. It is an expectation that all students are responsible for completing assigned work as it is an expectation of the course.

Homework Club

For anyone who is interested in extra help with biology, chemistry, or physics, Mr. C will be hosting a homework help group in the library from 3:20ish to 4:30 on Thursday, October 21. Thursdays will not necessarily be the permanent day for the group, just for next week due to Variety Night on Tuesday. There may or may not be snacks. Let us know what you think of this idea, girls - you know that if nobody shows up he won't keep doing it! Either leave comments or tell Mr. or Mrs. C what day would work best or if you like the idea at all.

Biology 20 Ecosystem Assignment Clarification

Hi girls, Mrs. C guest posting here. After listening to your anxiety during study periods and after school in the library, I have tried to pin Mr. C down on exactly what his expectations are for this assignment. He has referred me back to the rubric he posted previously and when I pushed him further for a word count said, and I quote, "In my opinion, to sufficiently cover the topic, you would require approximate 2-3000 words. That is depending on your skill as a writer." And I am assuming he means 2000, not actually 2. This is only if you are writing an essay, of course. If you're doing some other kind of project you're not worrying about a word count. Hope this helps.
Here's the original rubric again:

Rubric:
1) Have all deadlines been met. /5
2) Is there evidence of research from a multiple of sources. /5
3) Accurate description of the location. /5
4) Complete description of climate/ /5
5) Proper listing and classification of Flora and Fauna /20
